As noted in our first blog post, coal mine methane (CMM) drainage and utilization projects destroy methane emissions that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere during coal mining. In this subscriber-only blog post, we explore CMM drainage and utilization projects designed under the ACM0008 methodology and registered with the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). We explain how projects generate carbon credits under this methodology, including the technologies involved and challenges remaining for this project type, including the potential environmental and social risks, as well as the risk of non-additionality for greenhouse gas integrity.
